What it costs you.
Not what they advertise.
If you carry a balance, the sticker price is a down payment. TrueCost applies your card’s APR to every price you see while you browse, and rewrites it in place — before you buy, not after the statement arrives.
An educational calculator. It shows arithmetic, not advice.

29.99% APR over 18 months · $6.20/mo · $22.60 interest
This is what the extension does to a live product page.
Interest is priced in. It is just not printed.
Every retail page is designed to show you one number. If you pay it off in full that number is honest. If you carry a balance it is not — the rest arrives later, spread across statements where it is impossible to connect back to the thing you bought.
TrueCost does not tell you to stop buying things. It puts the second number next to the first one, at the moment the decision is actually made.
Paying the minimum
A $1,200.00 balance at 24.99% APR, paid at the standard minimum, takes
7 years 10 months
and costs $1,364.51 in interest — more than doubling what you borrowed.
How it works
It reads the page.
TrueCost scans the text of whatever you are browsing for prices. No clicking, no copying, no opening a calculator in another tab.
It applies your APR.
You enter your card's rate once. Every figure uses your actual number rather than a national average that describes nobody.
It rewrites the price.
The listed price is struck through and the real one appears beside it. Hover for the monthly payment and the total interest.

What TrueCost never does
It never sees your card number, your bank login, or your balance.
TrueCost needs one thing from you: an interest rate. That is a number you can read off a statement.
It turns itself off where it matters.
Banking domains, login pages, and account security pages are on a blocklist. The extension does not scan them at all.
The arithmetic happens in your browser.
Prices found on a page are calculated locally. The pages you visit are not sent anywhere.
It never tells you what to do.
No recommendations, no nudges, no scores. TrueCost shows you the math and stops there.
It reads prices in five currencies
Including European decimal notation, which trips up most price scanners.
| Currency | Locale | Formatted |
|---|---|---|
| USD | en-US | $1,299.99 |
| GBP | en-GB | £1,299.99 |
| EUR | de-DE | 1.299,99 € |
| CAD | en-CA | $1,299.99 |
| JPY | ja-JP | ¥130,000 |

Questions
Is this financial advice?
No. TrueCost performs a calculation and shows you the result. It does not recommend actions, rank products, or tell you whether to buy something. Every figure it shows is arithmetic you could do yourself with the same inputs.
Where does the payoff period come from?
The default is 18 months, applied consistently. You can change it. The figure shown is the total of the monthly payments that would clear the balance over that period at your APR — the same standard amortization a lender uses.
What if I pay my card off in full every month?
Then your true cost is the listed price and TrueCost has nothing useful to tell you. It is built for people carrying a balance.
Does it work on every site?
It reads prices on any retail page you visit. It deliberately does not run on banking sites, login pages, or account security pages.
Do I need an account?
Not for the manual calculator. Automated highlighting needs an account so the extension knows which APR to apply.
